The French navigators in the Southern Cone of America, and specially in the coasts of Chile occupy a historical position of lesser importance in comparison with the English and Dutch. Nevertheless, there was an interesting although intermittent French presence in the Southern Cone from the 16th Century onwards, although the most important voyages took place during the 18th Century. This article examines the strategic and commercial objectives of the French expeditions in comparison with the equivalent voyages ofthe British and Dutch.
