Se presenta la información arqueológica reunida durante 5 años de investigaciones efectuadas en el área de Punta Dungeness, boca oriental del Estrecho de Magallanes, en relación a la ocupación española dirigida por Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa en 1584. Se evalúan las evidencias culturales directas o indirectas encontradas en diferentes puntos de la localidad arqueológica, discutiendo su real papel en el proceso colonizador, para cuyo fin se integra la información histórica disponible.
Archeological information related with the Spanish occupation leadered by Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa in 1584, gathered at the Punta Dungeness area, eastern entrance of the Strait of Magellan, during five years of research, is presented. The direct and indirect cultural evidences found at different places of the archeological locality are evaluated and their real role in the colonizing process is discussed, integrating the available historical information.
