Eleven population census were taken at Magallanes between 1895 and 1992, ten of them at national level and one at communal. The present article analizes the evolution of the Magellanic population during a century, which, taking into consideration the limitative circumstances of a geographical isolated territory with rigorous natural conditions, has reached an important level. The most significant characteristics refered to the reasons and composition of its growth, and the causes of the lesser increasse during the periods 1940-1952 and 1982- 1992 are established, and an explicatory hypothesis for the last is put forward. Also, considerations are made on the territorial distribution, aspect which marks one of its most notorius characteristics, as is the high, early and substained urban concentration of the population -with an overwhelming preponderation on its capital center, Punta Arenas- and the consequent rural emptiness. Other analyzed variables are density, intersexual relation, nacionality and the population entities existing along time. Finaly the austral american macroregion pupulaltion units evolution is compared and considerations are made on the growth potenciability of the Magellanic population at the incoming XXI Century.
