During April 1989, ten persons in Punta Arenas showed symptoms of poisoning after eating "cholgas" (Aulacomya ater) gathered in Estero Núñez (Seno Otway). The bioassay of the shellfish showed P.S.P. presence with a range of toxicity between 9.620-11.560 M.U. Also temporary cysts of Alexandrium catenella were detected in the digestive tract OF A. ater. The presence of P.S.P. at lower concentrations was detected before and after April at other localities of the Magellan regiOn, and as shown by other studies A. catenella presence was associated with blooms of Prorocentrum micans. The periodicity and geographic extension of the phenomenon also suggests the existence of some low frequeney (ca. 10 years) climatic-hydrographic interaction underlying the high toxicity outbreaks in the region.
