The relations between local characteristics of climate, geology, soils, and geomorphology with the vascular flora and vegetation of Horn island (Cape Horn Archipelago, Chile) are analyzed. The effects of breeding birds and seawater spray on the euthrophication of the habitats of some plant communities are discussed. The floristic composition of plant communities and their distribution at this island is shown to adjust to the model established for the archipelago by Pisano (1980).
The following communities are treated: 1) Crassula moschata halophytic mats. 2) Plantago barbata dwarf cushion community. 3) Festuca cirrosa tussock. 4) Poa flabellata mixed tussock. 5) Hebe elliptica heath. 6) Poa flabellata subantarctic tussock. 7) Empetrum rubrum-Hebe elliptica-Berberis ilicifolia heath. 8) Astelia pumila caespitose mat bog. 9) Empetrum rubrum-Bolax gummifera cushion-heath bog. 10) Marsippospermum grandiflorum graminoid heath. 11) Nothofagus betuloides-Drimys winteri evergreen heath. 12) Escallonia serrata creeping heath. 13) Marsippospermum grandiflorum graminoid bog. 14) Evergreen Nothofagus betuloides dwarf forest. 15) Deciduous Nothofagus antarctica dwarf forest. 16) Bolax gummifera-Azorella selago montane cushion community.
