Data are presented on the predatorial behavior and prey species selection of peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), including the pallid falcon (Falco kreyenborgi), in the austral region of Chile and Argentina. Numerous prey species and observations of hunting techniques utilized by the falcon are presented for two basic vegetational zones in the region, the Patagonian steppe and the forest zone. The variety of prey species and the hunting techniques observed suggest that the peregrine in this geographic region behaves as an opportunistic predator of birds. Certain species seem to be hunted more frequently due to increased availability resulting from different types of behavior of the prey species.
