Total mercury concentration was investigated in the edible portion (muscle tissue) of two species of commercially important fishes, hake Merluccius polylepis (Ginsburg), brótula Salilota australis (Gunsther) and two kinds of crustaceans, southern king crab Lithodes antárctica (Jacquinot) and false king crab Paralomis granulosa (Jacquinot) collected at different localities along the Straits of Magellan ,in the Southern Fuegian Channels and in the región surrounding Cape Horn. Total mercury was measured by flameless atomic absorption. The mercury concentration ranged from 0.014 to 0.154 ppm. Mercury level was found to increase with size for false king crab specially in those caught nearby oil terminals. Also, mercury concentration of southern and false king crab meat canned at different fishery industries was investigated, these ranged from 0.082 to 0.260 ppm. Mercury content in fishes was lower and ranged from 0.026 to 0.039 ppm.
