The spatial pattern and density of Nacella magellanica (Gmelin, 1791) at eight intertidal sites of the eastern area of the Straits of Magellan, was determined with the quadrat count technique.
The species shows an aggregate pattern of distribution, which is represented by the Neyman type A and negative binomial series. However is not possible to stablish which is the originating mechanism. In one locality the spatial pattern can be represented also by a Poisson series, which is in relation to the quadrat size and density of the species at that site. According to the index of Morisita, the k parameter of the negative binomial and the index of dispersion of the ratio variance/mean values, the degree of aggregation of N. magellanica from one locality to another is very variable. This suggest that the tactors wich determine this type of spatial pattern are expressed with different degree from one site to another. Following a concordance analysis, the sampling sites were ordered in three groups according to its mean tidal range, beach slope, degree of compactness, size of blocks and boulders and degree of exposition. These variates considered altogether are not correlated with the degree of contagiousness of the species in each locality. Density of N. magellanica is low (between 0,4 and 8,6 specimens/meter2), incrcasing from its upper limit of distribution in the intertidal zone towards the infralittoral. It is demonstrated the existence of two homogeneous groups partially overlap according to the density of each locality. Two sites, were heterogeneous among them and also in respect to all other localities.
