The ocurrence of a Red Tide caused by the dinoflagellate Amphidoma sp. is reported. The phenomenon took place in a coastal área, south of Punta Arenas, in the Straits of Magellan. The bloom seems to be related with a thermical stratification of the water, which would be favoured by a period of calm with high solar radiation. The highest observed concentration was 678,000 cells per liter. The Bloom coincidid with a mild case of human intoxication by the comsumption of the mussel Mytilus edulis chilensis, but according to the available information, it can not be said whether or not Amphidoma sp. was the source of the toxin.
