| es_ES |
dc.description.abstract | The occurrence of a red tide caused by the ciliated protozoan Mesodinium rubrum(Lohmann) was recorded during the first few days of March, 1975 in Ensenada Wilson(54° 01' S; 71° 46' W), Isla Clarence Magallanes. The discolored area was estimed at about 3 - 4 Km. Surface concentrations of the ciliate varied from 436 to 2,430 cells/ml., but densities higher than 100 cells/ml. were also observed down to depths of 8 and 10 meters. The abundance and diversity of the associated phytoplankton were low. The surface temperatures and salinities in the affected sector ranged from 7.7 to 8.2° C and from 29.00 to 29.56%, respectively. Information is given about the vertical distribution of the organisms as well as the temperatures and salinities of the water column in each of the sampled sites. The cause of this red tide occurrence at Ensenada Wilson was not ascertained, but some aspects which might be implicated with the origin of the phenomenon are presented. Results both from this and other red tide caused by M. rubrum in Chile are compared with the results of previously reported red tides produced by the same species in other regions. | es_ES |
