Perimeter marking on guanaco long bones, a characteristic of Southern Patagonia
archaeofaunas, is discussed after the study of the collection from Cañadón Leona archaeological site, recovered by Junius Bird. Potential taphonomic and recovery biases are assessed, and the different hypotheses introduced to account for this technique are discussed. The versatility of perimeter marking is stressed, and so is the need to take into account the study of the particular contexts where it has been documented.
