Gould (1837) y C a Falco sparverius Linnaeus (1758) y Xolmis pyrope (Kittlitz 1830).
In Tierra del Fuego, the deciduous forest of lenga, Nothofagus pumilio (Poeppig & Endl.) presents scarce number of birds in its inner parts, in comparisson with its edges and clearings. On this basis, I formulated the hypothesis that management of the forest by means of shelterwood method would allow an increase of avian diversity. In order to test it, bird censuses on three lenga stands (A, B and C) during January 1995 in the area of Vicuña, southern Tierra del Fuego (Aprox. 54° 10'S-68° 50' W) were made. Forest A was not managed; forest B was exploited one year before of the present study and forest C had been exploited eight years before. At each forest site, morning counts with the method of point counts with unlimited distance were made. Forest A presented 9 species compared with 12 in B and 14 in
C. The species in A were Milvago chimango (Vieillot 1816), Enicognathus ferrugineus (Müller 1776), Aphrastura spinicauda (Gmelin 1789), Pygarrhichas albogularis (King 1831 ), Scytalopus magellanicus (Gmelin 1789), Elaenia albiceps (Lafresnaye & d'Orbigny 1837), Turdus falcklandii Quoy & Gaimard (1824). Phrygilus patagonicus Lowe (1923) and Carduelis barbata (Molina 1782). These species were also found in B and C except M. chimango that was absent in B. On the other hand, in B and C occurred Tachycineta meyeni (Cabanis 1 850), Troglodytes aedon Vieillot (1809) and Zonotrichia capensis (Müller 1776), not present in A. while B presented Buteo ventralis Gould (1837) and C Falco sparverius Linnaeu (1758) and Xolmispyrope (Kittlitz 1830) as exclusive species. Shannon's diversity indexes for A, B and C were of 1 .74, 1 .68 and 2.03 respectively. When comparing all censuses by a one way ANOVA, significant differences were found among the three forest settings (p < 0.05). Later on, the test of Tukey did not find significant differences between A and B, but it found differences between these and C, which showed a higher diversity than the former ones. It is concluded that our hypothesis is not fulfilled in the short term, but it does after several years.
