The colonization of the austral region of South America by Europeans triggered many environmental changes which affected its fauna of butterflies. Some impacts have been beneficial and others harmful. In some cases rapid changes have occurred in distribution, abundance
and host plants. The forces predisposing to these changes have been grazing, the naturalization of exotic plants, and the conversion of steppe and forest habitats to human use. Episodes of colonization and extinction may be recognized. The current state of the fauna is presented.
