Tierra del Fuego ha sido de gran interés para varios investigadores de la naturaleza desde la época del viaje de Hernando de Magallanes (Fernao Magalhaes). Desde el siglo XVI hasta nuestros días el carácter de la exploración ha cambiado en una dirección de mayor indagación científica y de estudio más detallado. Un número de expediciones nórdicas (Escandinavas) están entre las piedras angulares de la historia de la investigación fueguina. La tradición de la investigación finlandesa de Tierra del Fuego, en particular, se presenta en este artículo. Las expediciones conducidas por un versátil científico, Väinö Auer, en 1928-1952, fueron de gran significación para el estudio de la naturaleza finlandés como así también para el argentino y el chileno. Los objetivos principales fueron de carácter geológico cuaternario y un aspecto central fue la comparación entre los hemisferios sur y norte, la tradición ha continuado y continuara más adelante con una nueva generación de investigadores. El autor de este artículo, por ejemplo, condujo una expedición orientada biogeográfica y biológicamente a Tierra del Fuego en 1986-87.
Tierra del Fuego has been of great interest to various researchers of nature since the time of the convoy of Ferdinand Magellan (Fernao Magalhaes). From the l6th century to our days the character of exploration has changed in the direction of more scientific inquiry and
more detailed study. A number of Nordic (Scandinavian) expeditions are among the mile stones in ihe Fuegian history research. Finnish research tradition in Tierra del Fuego, in particular, is presented in this article. The expeditions led by a versatile scientist, Väinö Auer, in 1928-1952, were of great significance for the Finnish as well as the Argentinian and Chilean study of nature. The main objectives were Quaternary geological in character and, a very central aspect was the
comparison of the Southern and Northern Hemispheres with each other. The tradition has continued and will continue further with a new generation of researchers. The author of this article, for instance, led a biogeographically and biologically oriented expedition to Tierra del
Fuego in 1986-87.
