A review of glacier inventory and variations of 48 major glaciers of the Southern Patagonia Icefield is presented, obtained by several authors based on historical information, aerial photographs and satellite imagery. Most of the glaciers have been retreating, with a few in a state of equilibrium and advance. Glacier retreat is explained as a response to a clear signal of regional atmospheric warming, and an apparent precipitation decrease observed during last century.
